Words are powerful and well intended conversations can often be more hurtful than helpful when discussing mental health, trauma, substance misuse and suicide specifically. There is a safe and UNsafe way to have these discussions. When we know better, we do better. The first step in helping others is knowing how to speak responsibly, respectfully and safely while utilizing person-first language. When we use labels and other harmful language, we defy the dignity and humanity of a person.
Because Words Matter©, your words matter to those around you.

Having safe, honest and meaningful conversations about suicide is crucial to saving lives from this preventable death. Just as importantly is saying the word - SUICIDE. There is a safe and unsafe way to talk about suicide; it's up to each of us to make sure we're talking about suicide in a responsible, respectful, caring and compassionate way. Talking about suicide doesn’t give someone the idea and not talking about suicide doesn't keep it from happening. Say Suicide© increases the capability of an individual to have these life and death discussions in a responsible, competent and supportive manner by recognizing and responding to suicide risks.
